Dissapointed with Navman

So we are planning a trip to Europe and the UK to catch up with family. Taking advice from friends who have travelled before we decided to buy a new GPS so we can load the appropriate maps to make it easier to get around.

I did my research, my son did seperate research and we have a friend who works at JB Hi Fi who also did some research for us. We all came to the same conclusion, there's not much in it.Well we were wrong!!!

I decided on a Navman 85XLT because the Europe UK maps are simple to down load and it has 4wd tracks available for Aus.

My son, who is well skilled up on computers etc, has spent nearly 4 days trying to get the Western Europe maps turned on. We have paid the fee twice and still no luck. My son spent today on the phone with the tech support people from Navman and they offered to refund the price of the Western Europe Maps. Apparently they do not have an ISO file available for the 85XLT to turn the maps on.

So despite all the advertising in store and on the net, and despite what they have traiined the sales staff to tell the poor unsuspecting customer, they can not supply me with the maps that were the principle reason for me buying the $289 GPS.

So now we are going to Europe with no maps and no time to do anything about it. Oh they did say sorry and offer to have a supervisor call me within 48hours. I fly out in less than 24.

Impressed no, Dissapointed, angry and preparing to take it further. Oh yeah! Fair trading here I come.

Sorry to rant in the lead up to Christmas but I thought you should know just in case a Navman GPS was on your shopping list.

Thanks
Duncs

I put copilot on my iPad , all up $110 for all Europe but just uk cost about $40.

But reckon if I did not have an iPad or iPhone or an android phone with gps capabilities I would just buy a new one over there, I have heard of a few people trying to do what you are doing with out success.

However good luck with it,

Richard

I paid about $100 for Sygic Europe maps on the iphone and ipad but when I picked up the car in Germany they upgraded me for free to a Touareg that had a fabulous inbuilt gps. I never used the iphone gps the whole time I was there :-)

We vowed never to purchase another Navman again around three years ago following the purchase of a unit which was offered through a combination of Navman and Paypal.

The unit was faulty right out of the box and we believe Navman had decided that this was the way to off load a dud model. Long story. customer service - appalling to non-existent. Ended up taking them to consumer affairs where we were told we we not alone with our complaint. We ended with a replacement which is still in a box in the cupboard. Was recently going to buy a Magellan and found that Navman took them over in Oz last April so decided to stick with Garmin.

Ian & Sue I know where you are coming from. I purchased a brand new Tomtom XXL540 online and right from the start it could not lead a dog to water. As for Tomtom support they are absolutely useless. I am still triying to get some satisfaction from Tomtom support but when I rang them on Monday 12th December 2011 they are now saying the Where is map (Sensis) may be faulty but to correct the problem I would have to purchase a map out of my own pocket. I am waiting on an email from them and if there is not a satisfactory answer I am also going to cosumer affairs.

Duncs, I would suspect that you could hire a GPS from the car hire firms when you get to Europe. Won't help you when you get back here but at least over there you'll know where you're going.

I usually get more disappointed with myself for being stupid enough to be suckered into buying junk that doesn't work, than I am with the junk its self.
I bought a hand held GPS once that didn't work properly. After getting frustrated with the dealer I binned it & wiped my hands of it.
I didn't actually need the thing anyway.
Stupid of me for buying trouble.

Firstly. Seasons Greetings to ALL !
Get a Garmin. I am completely technology challenged and went to a specialist GPS shop in Melbourne. Garmin have all European maps on a card that goes into the machine. We spent 4 months travelling in UK, Eastern & western Europe and always knew where we were. Avoid the voice activation... it cant tell between ordinary conversation and a new instruction, otherwise it was just brilliant. The shop showed me how to use UTube, where there are many "How to" videos on the operation of it.
AS a byline we had it set on "avoid major roads and toll Roads" In Bosnia we set a "Shortest Route" and ended up in a mine field with two wheel ruts as the road.. so they do have all the roads on the maps included. Happy Christmas & have a good trip.

The download is fine. BA man have not updated the ISO file for the new maps. So we can't turn the maps on.

I will buy something in London.

Just binned our Garmin 1490t, less than 12 months old and as usefull as an ash tray on a motorbike.

During our recent trip from Tasmania to Queensland, regardless of what programme we entered for routes, it managed to find every laneway, backstreet and obscure way possible to take you.

The directions, where most times, given too late to be of any use.

Purchased a UNIDEN Trax5000 and the difference is unbelievable.

For those people who tow a caravan, the "Easy" route option makes on hellava lot of sense. Obviously programmed by someone who has actually towed and used a GPS.

Im very familiar with garmin
I think your problem would have been in the set up
when navigating there are options
ie shortest way/keep to main roads/avoid toll roads etc
keep to main roads would have avoided your problem I am sure

Hi Snapper49,

I too am familiar with the using of GPS systems (driving instructor) the programming/software in this unit IMO is hopeless.

Compared with the built in unit of the Toyota's, the LPG system I had and now the Uniden. The Garmin would be on the bottom of any list I would have.

Regards

Sorry Snapper49,

I have just reread my posting and it sounds a bit arrogant, I did not mean that because I am a driving instructor I know everything.

It was just a very frustrating experience to own that Garmin, especially as I thought I had done my research well and everything pointed to that brand and that model.

I can assure you that we tried every possible combination of routes and settings.

The other typo in the above reply was the LPG should read LG.

Cheers

Dusty

Im easy going didnt take it that way

I have 2 garmins on my boat and an old garmin street pilot 3 in my tug and have found them faultless
I did have the same problem with navigating ie taking all the laneways etc and resolved it by the options I mentioned
So I thought you could have had the same problem-all good

We spent 8 weeks travelling Europe this year using a Tom Tom that had UK, Europe, US, Oz and NZ already preloaded. A bit expensive at about $500 but probably saved marriage and worked faultlessly for the 8 weeks. If you are hiring a car for any more than 3 or 4 weeks probably chaeaper to buy one and take it with you.

Cheers

This could have all been easy, all you need is an Iphone. Why carry an extra GPS. Your Iphone today via Tom Tom or other Nav apps is simple and affordable. I would never buy another stand alone GPS.

It was working elsewhere in Europe and is working back here but when I put destinations in while in Greece it gave a strange error. The ipad was running the same maps and application and worked fine. One of the mysteries of life :-) Was it scared of Greek drivers?....they are insane....double yellow lines mean "overtake now" :-)

I use both a Hema HN5 and a Navman MY75T.....I got the latter as a steet directory only device (although it does have a bunch of Hema off road tracks on it) for use in all family cars and leave the HEMA in the 4x4. I find the Navman mapping on this device excellent and now that I've updated Route 66 on the Hema it too is a pretty good piece of kit. Maybe I'm just easy to please but I often wonder if a lot of complaints can be related to either over expectation of what can be achieved or a simple case of 'fat finger syndrome'.

I'm on my third GPS unit. The first was from Aldi and apart from the dodgy windscreen mount, worked very well for what it was. I then graduated to a Tomtom ONE which was an improvement but it had one major fault for someone who drives the outback. The zoom function would only hold in place for about 10 seconds then go back to default which was for urban streets. When I travel outback I like to have a longer view and know if there is any change in road conditions. There is a safety factor in this. If I'm behind a caravan I don't want to be continually nudging towards the centre line to see if there is a clear passing opportunity. I can use the GPS to see when I get a continuous stretch of straight road and then poke my head out for a look.

I've had the Tomtom for three years now and as the streets around my area are changing almost daily I need new maps. To upgrade the maps was going to be costly so for $138 I picked up a Navman MY60T. I made sure that zoom worked properly and with 3 years of free map upgrade I am very happy so far with this device. I really like the way the spoken directions include landmarks ('turn left at the servo....") and the very easy (compared to Tomtom) navigation set up where you just press the FIND button type in the place and away you go.

What I'm saying is that my GPS does what I want it to. Yours doesn't and was advertised inaccurately. According to Fair Trading regs you have the right to take it back and either demand a refund or a suitable replacement. Try this, I've done it a few times and always had success.
